Everton defender George to miss the remainder of the season with hamstring injury

Everton have confirmed that defender Gabby George will miss the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury.

The Blue Girls announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

George sustained the injury ahead of last week’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion. Manager Brian Sørensen described the injury as ‘severe’ therefore today’s news comes as no real surprise. George will not require surgery to correct the issue and she has already started her rehabilitation.

Everton have confirmed that George will be available for the start of the club’s pre-season programme for the 2023/2024 season in July, potentially leaving the door open for her slim England selection hopes for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023. The defender was not included in the last England squad for the April international window while she will still be in rehabilitation when the Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman announces her final squad next month. Wiegman could turn to George given the number of injuries to key players if she can prove her fitness, although selection does seem highly-unlikely at this stage and a risk that the England boss is not expected to take.

George has had a very successful season at club level. She has made 16 appearances for Everton in the Barclays Women’s Super League in which she has scored two goals. The player has shown versatility with manager Sørensen able to field her at centre-back or anywhere on the left side of the pitch.

Everton continue their season without George at Chelsea on Sunday 7 May.
