Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward is expecting Manchester United to provide her side with a major test when the two clubs meet at The Poundland Bescot Stadium this evening.
The Villans come up against a Manchester United outfit that are currently top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table. The Red Devils are battling to win a first-ever league title.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Aston Villa head coach Ward said that Manchester United are top of the table on merit and that they will provide a huge challenge for her side.
“It’ll be a massive challenge,” Ward said. “They’re there for a reason, they’ve shown a huge amount of resilience and quality. They’ve continued to score goals and don’t concede many; they’ve only conceded nine goals all year but scored an awful lot and have threats everywhere.
“They deserve an awful lot of credit, they are there because they deserve to be there. From their point of view, they’ve got five games to play and they have to win them all but we will do our best to make sure that we give everything to try and get the result.”
Aston Villa are set to play at home on a Friday night for the first time this season. Ward went on to say that she is expecting another large crowd and a special atmosphere under the floodlights.
She said “It has had a positive impact on the crowd, we are expecting about 5,000 there; similar numbers to Chelsea which is excellent. I think anyone that was at that Chelsea game will know the Bescot was bouncing and hopefully, it is the same. We know that United will bring a huge number of fans, they have an unbelievable away following. I expect it to be a fairly good night in terms of atmosphere.”
Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at 7.15pm. Card only turnstiles will be in operation at The Poundland Bescot Stadium.
