Beard wants positive reaction from Liverpool against Chelsea

Liverpool manager Matt Beard is hoping to get a positive reaction from his side when they travel to Chelsea this evening.

The Reds suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to struggling Leicester City in their last match at The King Power Stadium on Saturday. It was arguably one of Liverpool’s worst performances of the season so far.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Chelsea game, Liverpool boss Beard said that the reaction of the players on the training ground has been good and it is now about taking that positivity to South West London.

“The data doesn’t lie and neither do the clips that we go through with the players,” Beard said. “Nobody likes seeing themselves up on the screen if they didn’t make a recovery, haven’t tucked round and got into position, they’ve given cheap possession away or not broken out when we’ve got the ball. That was our performance on Saturday.

“Nobody likes seeing themselves on the clips but at the end of the day, it has happened and we had a tough meeting, and it was tough.

“It has been dealt with, we’ve trained well and it is about how we respond and react to that. We’ve got to make sure that we respond in the right way and we give a good account of ourselves because the games against Chelsea this year have been quite close.

“We’re going to have a say in the title run-in and we want to make sure that we are honest in every performance and we do the best that we can to continue to pick points up, it is really important that we do that.”

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the reverse fixture at Prenton Park on the opening day of the season and Beard said that his side can take heart from that result.

He said “We’ve performed well against the top teams this year, Chelsea is the only one where we’ve crossed the line, so we can take heart from that.

“If you look at the FA Cup game, it was a good game and we were unlucky not to get anything out of it. We were up against Sam Kerr that day.

“For me, it is about getting a reaction from Saturday, making sure that we put the wrongs right. I know that as long as we do the basics right and we work hard, we have half a chance against anyone. We want to go there and get something out of the game.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 7.15pm this evening.
