Plenty left for Aston Villa to play for insists Ward ahead of Reading fixture

Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that there is plenty left for her side to play for in the final weeks of the season.

The Villans travel to the Select Car Leasing Stadium to take on struggling Reading in their latest match this afternoon. Ward’s side also have a Villa Park date with Liverpool remaining on the calendar, along with a trip to title-chasing Arsenal.

When speaking to the media ahead of the Reading game, Aston Villa boss Ward said that there’s still lots for her side to play for this season and they remain motivated to do their very best in every single game.

“I think the added motivation is that three points (against Reading) might just about be enough to be able to secure fifth, that’s going to be important,” Ward said. “We owe it to the league to make sure that we turn up in both of those games (against Reading and Arsenal) because they’re both playing for relegation and the title. The one sandwiched in the middle (against Liverpool) is the last one at Villa Park.

“You’d like to think that there is added motivation on all three games and we will do our best to make sure that we give a good account of ourselves in all three.”

Aston Villa will come up against one of the biggest and most physical sides in the division this afternoon in the form of bottom club Reading. Ward went on to say that the focus isn’t tailored towards The Royals’ unique identity, it remains on how Aston Villa conduct themselves in Berkshire.

She said “Naturally, you have to respect the opposition who you play against and I think we’ve done that all season. Ultimately, it is about what we do; what we do with the ball, how we execute our game plan.

“We will obviously look to hurt them in areas where we feel that we can and that will be the focus. We’ve played some really good stuff this year and we will attempt to get out there and do the same this weekend.”

Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Reading kicks-off at 2pm.
