Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that he has a team of rebels that are ready to upset Chelsea in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley this afternoon.
The Red Devils take on The Blues in their first-ever appearance in a major domestic cup final. Opponents Chelsea are the current trophy holders and four-time winners.
Chelsea go into the game as the favourites, however, Manchester United boss Skinner says that his team of rebels are ready to tear up history and topple the South West Londoners.
“We are getting closer (to Chelsea),” Skinner said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “I’m absolutely convinced that we should have had two penalties last time and we’ve got VAR this time.
“On that day, Chelsea were tired, they had a heavy schedule of games, so this will be different. There’s no doubt in my mind that Chelsea are the favourites because of the fact that they’ve been here before but we have a team of rebels that want to make sure that isn’t the fact.
“It’s a single game, a single focus. We will try to get all of the psychological challenges right and manage and adapt as best as we can.”
Chelsea have scored 13 goals and conceded zero in their last two matches. The Blues defeated Everton 7-0 a week ago before hammering Leicester City 6-0 in midweek. Skinner is not concerned about Chelsea’s current goalscoring form and he wants his side to give The Blues as much hurt as they receive.
He said “To score the amount of goals that they have scored in two games (is impressive) but if I step back from a coaching point of view and look at Leicester and Everton, I’m sure the coaches will be a little bit disappointed with the mistakes made in the games, they almost made it a little bit easier for Chelsea to score those goals. What they did was score them.
“They’re deadly but we’ve got to make sure that we keep that to a minimum. Chelsea always create chances in every game that they play, so you’ve got to expect that a little bit but the reality is that we have to make sure that they hurt at the other end. If we do that and play with the right attitude and mentality, then it is going to be a really exciting game.
“There’s no way that we can stop Chelsea doing everything but we can prepare as much as possible.”
The 2022/2023 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final kicks-off at 2.30pm.
