Southampton opt to release quintet after first season in the Championship

Southampton have opted to release five players following the conclusion of their first season in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

The Saints revealed their released list via an update on their official club website earlier today.

It has been confirmed that Georgie Freeland, Phoebe Williams, Ella Pusey, Beth Lumsden and Ella Hunkin are all leaving the club when their contracts expire this summer.

Forward Pusey netted five goals in 18 appearances for The Saints in the Barclays Women’s Championship this season. Attacker Lumsden made 16 league appearances in a Southampton shirt while defender Freeland and midfielder Williams were used less frequently by head coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale. Youngster Hunkin did not make a senior appearance for the club after coming through the youth system.

Southampton have also confirmed their intention to retain 15 members of their 2022/2023 squad. Those players that are being retained are Kayla Rendell, Ella Morris, Milly Mott, Lucia Kendall, Rosie Parnell, Laura Rafferty, Megan Wynne, Sophia Pharoah, Ashleigh Ward, Lexi Lloyd-Smith, Alice Griffiths, Katie Wilkinson, Megan Collett, Paige Peake and Beth Howard.

Spacey-Cale’s side were promoted to the Barclays Women’s Championship after defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in the FA Women’s National League Championship Play-Off Final 12 months’ ago. The Saints ended their first season in the elite game in sixth position in the Barclays Women’s Championship table.
