‘This is business as usual’ – Chelsea boss Hayes discusses title showdown

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says that it is business as usual as her side travel to Reading this weekend in search of another Barclays Women’s Super League title.

Unless Manchester United thrash Liverpool at Prenton Park, a point against Reading will be enough to seal a fourth consecutive Barclays Women’s Super League title for The Blues.

While the title race reaches its thrilling climax this weekend, Hayes says that it is business as usual for her side and that final day drama is what was always expected.

“It’s what we prepared for anyway,” Hayes said when speaking to the media about the title race going down to the final day. “I look back at every campaign and we’ve only ever won the league by a couple of points at best, maybe a game somewhere along the line.

“This is business as usual for us, it is what we prepared for at the very beginning of the season.”

Chelsea are the red-hot favourites this weekend as they face a Reading side that needs a win to have any chance of avoiding relegation. The Royals defeated the South West Londoners in the same fixture last season but that result is not on the minds of the Chelsea players.

“We don’t think about that, it’s one thing that doesn’t enter our minds,” Hayes said. “What we think about is we are exactly where we want to be, we’re in a position to control the outcome.

“Everyone behind the scenes, both staff and players, have worked so hard to get to this point and maintaining the focus, the concentration, the consistency is all I have been interested in with them all week to make sure that we are in a position to perform. Everyone knows their roles, they know their tasks and they know they need to be in the best mindset which they are.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a really strong Chelsea fanbase in the crowd. We need the supporters to come in their numbers and we need to keep reminding the team that they are 90 minutes away from winning the title, all of my energy is focused on doing that.”

Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Reading kicks-off at 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
