Manchester City end the season with victory over Everton

Manchester City have ended the season with a 3-2 victory over Everton at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.

Khadija Shaw netted a double for The Cityzens while Lauren Hemp was also on target as Gareth Taylor’s side ended the season with a win.

A quiet first half saw the hosts enjoy plenty of attacking play without seriously troubling Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan. Hemp saw an early header loop onto the top of the visitors’ net before Chloe Kelly ballooned a shot over the bar at the end of a flowing attacking move. Other than those chances, there was very little to report in the opening 45 minutes.

Both sides had chances early in the second half. First, Hemp thumped a powerful effort narrowly wide across goal before Nicoline Sørensen’s deflected shot at the other end was gathered by Khiara Keating.

The deadlock was then broken by Manchester City. A flowing attacking move involving Kelly, Hemp and Shaw resulted in the Jamaican international firing the ball low into the corner of the net. It was an excellent team goal.

Manchester City then doubled their lead through a superb curling effort from Hemp before Shaw fired home from close range to make it 3-0.

Despite being three goals down, Everton were not deterred and they pulled a goal back through a Lucy Hope tap-in late on in the game. Leonie Maier then scrambled home a second goal for The Blue Girls with less than a minute remaining.

Manchester City end the season in fourth position in the Barclays Women’s Super League table while Everton finish the campaign in sixth.
