Four players are leaving Barclays Women’s Championship club Durham when their contracts expire later today.
The Wildcats announced the news via a squad update on their official club website last night.
It has been reported that Maria Farrugia, Rio Hardy, Bridget Galloway and Hannah Greenwood are all moving on this summer.
Forward Hardy is arguably the most high-profile departure with the player having ended the 2022/2023 season as Durham’s top scorer with seven goals in 19 appearances in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Defender Greenwood has spent the last five years in and around the Durham first team while attacker Galloway has been with The Wildcats for three seasons. Maltese international midfielder Farrugia joined Durham from Sunderland last summer but she has struggled for regular starts in her time at Maiden Castle.
Durham moved from part-time operations to a full-time model last summer. The club initially found the transition really challenging but their form improved as the season went on and they were able to record a seventh-place finish in the Barclays Women’s Championship table. The vast majority of the squad are expected to stay together for the 2023/2024 season with Durham hoping to begin a gradual climb back up the table towards the promotion place.
