Sunderland have completed the signing of defender Amy Goddard ahead of the new Barclays Women’s Championship season.
The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this evening.
Goddard returns to the Barclays Women’s Championship following a short period playing in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division with both Bridgwater United and Oxford United. The defender has previously turned out for Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in the second tier while she gained some Barclays Women’s Super League experience with Bristol City and Yeovil Town.
It has been reported that Goddard has been on trial at Sunderland and the player has done enough to earn herself a deal on Wearside for the coming season.
After adding Goddard to her squad, Sunderland manager Melanie Reay said “Amy has shown us last week what she can add to the current squad. She is a ball playing centre-half who has a huge presence in both boxes. She is a natural leader which can be seen with how smoothly she has integrated into the squad.”
Goddard becomes Sunderland boss Reay’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window following the recent additions of Mary McAteer, Katie Kitching, Natasha Fenton and Jenna Dear.
