Upcoming games present an opportunity for Sheffield United says Rayner

Sheffield United’s attacking midfielder Bex Rayner says that the club’s next three games present a good opportunity to really get the new season up and running.

The Blades recorded a spirited 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic on opening day. Rayner was on target for the South Yorkshire side, levelling matters with a stunning 25-yard strike in second half injury time.

Sheffield United’s upcoming fixtures see them take on Sunderland and Lewes at home, either side of a trip to Blackburn Rovers. The Blades will be expected to finish above those three clubs in the Barclays Women’s Championship this season and attacking midfielder Rayner sees the next three matches as an opportunity to progress.

“They’re three teams that I think we can go on and beat,” Rayner said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time. “We look to these games and need to make sure that we get the points.

“It is important that we look at each game as it comes. We want to get the points from each one because we want to win the league. Each game, we tick them off, get the points and carry on.”

Sheffield United manager Jonathan Morgan brought in 12 new players over the summer with five of those signings starting the match at The Valley last weekend. Rayner was impressed with how things came together on opening day.

She said “It gelled really well. We had been building in pre-season but there were a lot of changes; going full-time and adapting to that lifestyle.

“It came together really well (at Charlton).”
