‘We really grew into the game’ – Positives for Lewes in Durham defeat says Hamilton

Lewes midfielder Caragh Hamilton says that the team’s performance against Durham was a step up from the opening day of the season.

The Rooks went down 4-1 to Southampton at The Dripping Pan on the opening day. Lewes were also defeated 2-0 at Durham this afternoon but there was a marked improvement in their performance. The Sussex side never looked like coming away with nothing until Amy Andrews got on the end of a slightly wayward Sarah Wilson cross to open the scoring for Durham with nine minutes to go.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the final whistle at Maiden Castle, Lewes midfielder Hamilton said that there was little to separate the two sides and that The Rooks really grew into the contest as the game went on.

“I really don’t think there was much in it,” Hamilton said. “Neither team really did enough in creating real quality chances; there were a few half-chances here and there but it was a really even game.

“We really grew into the game. We didn’t do that last week but I feel like we did that in the second half.  We came into it really strong and we were really solid.

“I don’t think the first goal was intended but then the game opened up, we had to go for it and that leaves you a bit more vulnerable at the back. That’s the way it goes and then they get the second goal on the counter attack.”

Maiden Castle is a difficult place for visiting teams to go and get a result but Hamilton said that Lewes were only focused on themselves and their development.

She said “A lot of teams come here and they’re defeated before they come onto the pitch. Credit to Durham for that, they try to make it a real fortress.

“We don’t fear anyone in this league and we certainly didn’t fear them coming here today. We wanted to focus on ourselves and look to improve on last week rather than focus on Durham.”

Lewes are back in action next Sunday when Birmingham City are the visitors to The Dripping Pan.
