Reading fans were like an extra player says Gilbert

Reading manager Liam Gilbert praised the fans for their support after his side recorded a goalless draw against Charlton Athletic at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Royals were reduced to 10 players four minutes into the second half after Sanne Troelsgaard Nielsen was shown a red card for an altercation off the ball. Reading battled hard and they kept their opponents out as they collected another point.

When speaking to the media after the match, Reading boss Gilbert said that he was happy with how The Royals came out in the second half after a cagey opening first 45 minutes.

“We started the second half really brightly and I thought we were on the front-foot,” he said. “We had a lot of impetus coming out from the break and obviously going down a player just takes it away.

“They had a lot of overloads and moved the ball really well and thankfully, they didn’t break us down between units enough.”

The fixture was Reading’s opening home game of the season at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. The Royals needed the backing of their fans as they battled for a share of the spoils and Gilbert was full of praise for the supporters after the final whistle.

He said “I think we really needed them for the last 10-15 minutes when our legs were really heavy. You could really feel the support drive us and that was something for me which was brilliant to hear.

“We want them with us because if they’re with us on the journey; it was like [having] an extra player today.”

Having drawn both of their opening games, Reading sit in eighth place in the Barclays Women’s Championship table with two points. Their next game is away at London City Lionesses on Sunday.
