Chelsea forward Maika Hamano’s loan spell with Swedish club Hammarby IF has been prematurely ended by a shoulder injury.
The Blues announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.
Hamano joined Chelsea from INAC Kobe Leonessa in January and was immediately loaned to Hammarby to further her development. The young Japanese forward went on to make a real impact in Sweden, scoring 11 goals in 22 appearances for Hammarby in all competitions. Hamano was a Swedish Cup winner with the club in June.
The 19-year-old’s loan was set to span the entire Swedish season, however, it has been revealed that Hamano sustained a shoulder injury whilst at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 with Japan in the summer and she has now returned to parent club Chelsea. Hamano has recently undergone surgery and she will be out of action for a significant period.
After Hamano’s loan spell with Hammarby came to an end, the club’s Sporting Director, Johan Lager said “We are very sorry for Maika, who missed both the opportunity for more games in the World Cup and an exciting autumn with us.
“She has been an important player for us and is a wonderful person. We hope we haven’t seen the last of Maika in the Bajen jersey!”
Hamano will now begin her rehabilitation with her parent club.
