Blackburn Rovers have continued their good recent record at Ewood Park after coming from behind to defeat Sheffield United 2-1 this afternoon.
Rovers found themselves a goal down following Isobel Goodwin’s second-minute strike but Meg Hornby and Lauren Thomas netted for the hosts later in the game as they turned things around.
Sheffield United got off to the perfect start at a muggy Ewood Park. Sophie Haywood’s cross was met on the volley by Goodwin and the shot somehow beat home keeper Alex Brooks.
Georgia Walters spurned a couple of chances as Rovers searched for an equaliser before Goodwin saw an effort stump the base of the post. The loose ball fell to Haywood but it got trapped in her feet.
Goodwin continued to cause problems and she twice drew saves from Brooks before the hosts were awarded a penalty when Rachel Brown was adjudged to have fouled Lucy Shepherd in the box. Helen Seed stepped up but she saw her effort saved by Fran Stenson.
Rovers went close again just before the break. Walters found herself through on goal but Stenson came up with a big save.
The hosts should have been level seven minutes after the restart when Shepherd rounded Stenson but she failed to place the ball into an unguarded net. The goal finally arrived moments later when Hornby thumped the ball into the corner of the net.
Simon Parker’s side were then in dreamland when Thomas converted from a cross with 20 minutes to go to put her side 2-1 up.
Stenson denied Hornby with a big save in the dying minutes before Brooks showed her quality at the other end, expertly keeping Bex Rayner, Haywood and Goodwin’s efforts out of the net.
In the end, Rovers held on for the win as they kept up their 100% record at Ewood Park this season.
Rovers travel to Watford for their next match in a week’s time while Sheffield United play host to Lewes.
