Liverpool legend Dowie announces retirement

Liverpool legend Natasha Dowie is retiring from professional football at the age of 35.

The player’s retirement was announced by Liverpool this morning via a post on their official club website.

The forward has enjoyed a 19-year playing career. Her most successful spell came at Liverpool between 2012 and 2015. She helped the club to back-to-back FAWSL titles in 2013 and 2014. She returned to Liverpool on loan from Reading in January this year and saw out the end of her career on Merseyside. In total, Dowie has scored 47 goals in all competitions for The Reds, a club-record haul.

Dowie played for eight different English clubs in her career while she also tested herself in Australia, the United States, Sweden, Norway and Italy.

After her retirement was announced, Dowie said “Reflecting back, I feel really proud of my career and I actually think there’s no better way than I would have liked to have ended my career than at Liverpool Football Club.

“I think having been here on loan last season, it just felt right. I had a couple of opportunities to go abroad again and play, but it was just nice to be home.

“I haven’t been home now for eight years and it just kind of felt right. Nothing excited me as much as staying at Liverpool and at home.”

Dowie will remain with Liverpool in a club ambassador role. She will work closely with the club’s programmes for aspiring young male and female players.
