New Tottenham Hotspur head coach Robert Vilahamn says that the initial aim is to get his side playing ‘the Tottenham style’.
Spurs kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with an incredibly tough fixture against champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Lilywhites were only able to finish in ninth place last season after being pulled into a relegation battle. Vilahamn has now been appointed as the club’s new head coach and he says that his first challenge is to get the team playing a distinctive style of football.
“If you look at last year, the club struggled but before that, they were in a great position in the league,” Vilahamn said when speaking in the pre-match press conference.
“I think we want to be a top team in this league but the main thing is to start building a style of football that will take us up there. If we build a team to win games, we will succeed but for this year, we are going to make sure that we play the Tottenham style. We are going to build a team that can win for the long run.”
While Chelsea go into this weekend’s fixture as the strong favourites, Vilahamn fully believes that his side can go to South West London and stun the champions.
He said “You can see that they lost their first game against Liverpool last year. I was coaching Häcken this year and my first game at home against one of the bottom teams was also a 1-0 loss.
“It can happen. Even if they are a really good team that won the league last year, we have some really good players and have the qualities to hurt them. We have international players in every position and I think that we can compete with them.
“Of course, they have had the same coach for many years and players working together, so their relationships are more established. We need to go there and start this journey, we are prepared.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 5.30pm on Sunday evening.
