A top half finish is Liverpool’s main ambition says manager Beard

Liverpool manager Matt Beard says that this season’s main aim is to better the club’s seventh-place finish from last season.

The Reds kick-off the new campaign with a difficult fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Liverpool boss Beard said that his side have recruited well over the summer and that the target is to break into the top half of the table this season.

“We’ve recruited well enough to improve on last season’s position,” Beard said. “We finished where we should have finished statistically (last season) and our biggest Achilles heel was probably scoring the goals.

“When we went through the recruitment process, we brought in Mia Enderby who is a very talented young player who scored goals at the level below and Sophie (Roman Haug) coming in from Roma was a big signing for us, her goalscoring record speaks for itself.

“That was our issue last year; we were eighth in creating chances and 11th in converting them but we are looking forward to the challenge ahead. Everyone has strengthened and if you look at every squad in the division, it is just going to make it harder and harder every year.”

Liverpool failed to record an away win last season and they couldn’t have been handed a tougher start this year than facing Arsenal in front of 50,000 Gunners. Beard understands the need for away wins and admits that collecting more points on the road will help the club to achieve their targets.

He said “We were unlucky at times last year on the road. We didn’t win a game but we did pick points up on the road which was important.

“It’s a tough league, when you go away from home it is tough. Playing at the Emirates in front of 50,000 is a completely different pressure than what it would be at Boreham Wood but that’s the same for both teams.

“We are aware of that (the away record) but our ambition this year is to improve on last year’s finish and if we are to do that, we need to win games away from home.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Arsenal kicks-off at 2pm.
