Liverpool have caused an upset on the opening day of the Barclays Women’s Super League season, beating Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.
A Barclays Women’s Super League record crowd of 54,115 were in attendance, most of those fans supporting Arsenal. However, it was Liverpool who gatecrashed the party thanks to Miri Taylor’s goal early in the second half.
The first 20 minutes of the match very much had an opening day feel with both sides trying to work each other out. Midway through the half, visiting keeper Rachael Laws was called into action twice in quick succession. She first pushed a Lotte Wubben-Moy header to safety before tipping a Caitlin Foord cross behind.
Later in the half, Laws was required to tip a thunderous Frida Maanum effort wide before keeping out Kim Little’s long range shot.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half and it was Liverpool who claimed a shock lead. Missy Bo Kearns pulled a ball back for Taylor and she fired home from inside the box.
Arsenal immediately went in search of an equaliser and Cloé Lacasse headed wide from a cross before a corner kick resulted in a goal-mouth scramble but Liverpool survived.
The visitors switched off seven minutes from the end when an Arsenal free-kick was taken quickly. A cross came in from the left but Foord could only flick the ball over the bar with her head.
Arsenal will now turn their attentions to a trip to Manchester United on Friday evening while Liverpool’s next opponents are Aston Villa at Prenton Park.
