Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that she is confident that her side will begin to pick up points very soon.
The Villans have lost both of their opening Barclays Women’s Super League fixtures against Manchester United and Liverpool while this weekend brings a daunting trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal.
Aston Villa spent well in the summer transfer window and they will be expected to begin to climb the table sooner rather than later. Head coach Ward says that while there is pressure on her side, they are going through a tough run of games and she believes that they aren’t far away from getting some positive results.
“I think you have to work every day like it’s your last whether you’re under pressure or not,” Ward said when speaking in an Aston Villa press conference. “The reality is that you continue to work and focus on what you can focus on. We are a very honest group that will always analyse what we do whether we win, lose or draw.
“Let’s talk about the bigger picture; we’ve come close against Manchester United and 11 v 11, I believe we get something from it. We’ve then gone away to Liverpool and whilst we’re disappointed in our performance, there’s no problem losing to a side that’s just beaten Arsenal and they’re a good side.
“Our run of fixtures isn’t particularly healthy, call it what you wish, but like I said, we’re an honest group that are focused, that will work hard, they’ll continue to do everything to pick up points. It won’t be long before we do so.”
Looking ahead to Arsenal, Ward expressed her admiration for The Gunners’ quality and their style of play. She expects another incredibly tough match at the Emirates Stadium.
She said “They were excellent against Manchester United (last week). They’ve got a world-class squad, they’ve got a top manager and they got top players. They can rotate and field a world-class 11 from whoever they put out.
“They’re a team that you enjoy watching, I really enjoy watching Arsenal play. They are a good side and have got loads about them, different dimensions. We’re under no illusions, they are top side and we’re going to have to absolutely be at our best.”
Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Arsenal kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
