Birmingham City earned a well-deserved three points on the road as they defeated Sheffield United 4-0 at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon.
After a sticky start in this season’s Barclays Women’s Championship, the Blues are now unbeaten in three league matches and they are climbing the table.
When speaking to WSL Full-Time, Birmingham City head coach Darren Carter admitted that he was really pleased with how his side performed at Bramall Lane.
“We wanted to come here and start with a lot of energy,” Carter said. “It was important that we started on the front-foot and that we were aggressive in the game and I thought from minute one, the players stepped on and executed what we wanted to do really well in and out of possession.
“We’ve spoken a lot about being ruthless and converting our chances. With an early goal, that gives you confidence and then Martha (Harris) hits an absolute missile that goes into the top corner.”
It was a rapid start for the visitors with Gemma Lawley scoring their first goal inside two minutes. Lawley had been on the bench for Birmingham City’s last league match against Sunderland. She made an instant impact at Bramall Lane with a powerful header from Lucy Quinn’s corner.
“Gemma’s had to wait to get in the team a little bit but once she’s in, her performances have been very good back-to-back,” Carter said when commenting on the defender’s recent recall. “I thought she was excellent in the week against Brighton.
“We felt from set-pieces that we wanted to be more aggressive and potentially go and hurt teams a little bit more because we’ve got threats. It was perfect timing from Gemma and a great delivery from Lucy Quinn.”
Birmingham City failed to win any of their first four matches this season and Carter wants his side to now enjoy the feeling of winning games.
He said “It’s important that we enjoy this win. I want them to enjoy the wins because we’ve taken our punches already this season, we’ve had a fair bit of adversity and not got the results that our performances have deserved. The performance was there and we got the result we deserved, so we enjoy it.
“We have Watford at home next week before another international break, so it’s important that we back this up now and go full throttle into that game and then we can have a reset.”
Birmingham City’s next Barclays Women’s Championship fixture against Watford kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
