Finnigan delighted to help Everton get off the mark on derby day

If there’s one thing that Megan Finnigan loves, it’s scoring in a Merseyside derby. The Everton captain’s header helped her side to record a 1-0 victory over neighbours Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The win was Everton’s first of the season in the Barclays Women’s Super League while they remain unbeaten against Liverpool in manager Brian Sørensen’s tenure.

When speaking to the media after the match, Finnigan said that there was no better occasion for Everton to pick up their first win of the campaign.

“It’s a derby and for us today, I said before the game it’s almost like a six-pointer because we started the season so poorly and that was so disappointing,” Finnigan said. “There is no better game than a derby to come and turn that around.”

Finnigan went on to praise Clare Wheeler, who was brought on in the fourth minute after Lucy Hope was forced off through injury.

She said “We really had to dig in (for the win). They had some near chances but I could go through everyone (who performed well), especially Clare Wheeler coming in at the start of the game and playing out of position at left wing-back. She came in and did really good.”

After a difficult start to the new season, Finnigan is hoping that Everton can now push on from their derby victory.

“We’ve got a tough run with United, Spurs and Chelsea. Yes, it’s a hard run but every game in this league is hard and you’ve seen the results so far this season, anyone can beat anyone. On our day, I’d fancy us to beat anybody and hopefully, we can really kick on now.”

Finnigan has scored both of Everton’s goals this season. The 25-year-old is hopeful that she can add to her tally as the campaign goes on.

She joked “Yeah, top scorer, catch me if you can. Obviously, set plays are something that we have got a really good advantage on this year, so it’s something that we target. For myself personally, I’m confident and I back myself to get the chance.”

Everton are next in action on Sunday when Manchester United are the visitors to Walton Hall Park.
