Sam Kerr helped herself to a hat-trick as Chelsea recorded a 4-1 victory over Paris FC in a UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage match at Stamford Bridge this evening.
The visitors offered plenty in the first half but Chelsea’s class eventually shone through with forward Kerr grabbing the headlines.
Paris FC enjoyed their share of the possession early on but they were unable to test Ann-Katrin Berger in the Chelsea goal. At the other end, Lauren James found herself in a good position to score but she disappointingly fired wide.
While James didn’t net the game’s opening goal, she was the creator. She curled a delicious ball into the box for Kerr to flick in from six yards.
Chiamaka Nnadozie then produced a big save to deny Johanna Rytting Kaneryd before Paris FC levelled matters through Thea Greboval’s looping header across goal.
The visitors could have been ahead early in the second half when Mathilde Bourdieu was sent through on goal but Berger was able to make a crucial save.
Paris FC were made to rue that miss two minutes later when Kerr fired Chelsea 2-1 up after getting on the end of a cross. Kerr soon went on to complete her hat-trick when she lobbed the ball over Nnadozie from 20 yards.
Erin Cuthbert then thumped a shot narrowly off target before Kerr spurned a good opportunity to net her fourth goal from inside the area.
Berger was called into action again late on as she tipped Julie Dufour’s effort over the bar before Sophie Ingle swept home a fourth Chelsea goal in second half stoppage time.
This evening’s result leaves Chelsea in second place in their group with four points, two points behind leaders BK Häcken who are The Blues’ next opponents at Stamford Bridge.
