Tottenham Hotspur head coach Robert Vilahamn says that the club’s long-term aim is to become the best team in North London.
The Lilywhites host neighbours Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the first North London Derby of the season in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Spurs boss Vilahamn expressed his excitement ahead of his first taste of a North London Derby in the Barclays Women’s Super League. He said that the ultimate goal is to become the team in North London.
“When you come here and you realise how it is, it’s actually a really big one,” Vilahamn said. “You understand that these clubs really want to be that club in North London. For me, it’s to try and make sure it’s being the best team in North London and in the long run, we are going to be that.”
Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal have been in scintillating form in recent weeks. They were emphatic 4-1 winners against Barclays Women’s Super League title-holders Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium last weekend. Vilahamn addressed his opposition, adamant that his side will not alter their brand of football when coming up against The Gunners.
He said “I am aware that they are very good, so if we feel like we have struggles and we have situations in the game, then we can make sure we take care of that. The main thing is for me to show the fans that come to the stadium that it is always about playing the way we want to do it, it’s not always about the opponent. I want to show our fans the way we want to play, where we are right now and how we’re going to improve this team. Hopefully, we can actually win with this way.
“We’re going to go for it of course but the main thing is that I’m going to show them that we’re great, we’re going to play the way we want to do it. I think that’s what the fans want to see, they want to see us play really good, offensive football and try to score many goals. For me, that’s my way of trying to create an environment where you want to be watching our games, it’s not always about winning, it’s about how we perform and how we play.”
