Tottenham Hotspur head coach Robert Vilahamn says that Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City provides another milestone to assess level of performance.
Vilahamn has implemented an exciting brand of attacking football at Spurs this season but the project is very much a work-in-progress.
When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Manchester City, Vilahamn said that the match offers another opportunity to measure his side’s progress.
“We knew that we could go and beat Arsenal, so we know we can beat Manchester City as well,” Vilahamn said. “The result on Sunday is important but what is more important is how we can compete against them, our style and how we can take steps forward in our defending because in the long-term, we want to dictate these games.
“Win or lose, I want to see bravery in how we play against them and that we have competed. Of course, we want to win but the main thing is how we improve our way of playing against the top teams. Next year, we want to be one of those top teams and go for one of the Champions League spots. It’s a good milestone to see where we are now and whether the new players that have come in can compete against them.
“A win is good for self-confidence, it’ll help us close the gap and will show that we are competing for the top four positions. It’s a good game and afterwards, we will see what it looks like in the table.”
Going on to discuss ambitions for the remainder of the season, Vilahamn said that the main focus remains on his side improving their performances week-on-week rather than league position.
He said “I hope we can dictate more games and score more goals. We want to be even better in the press and defend better.
“I don’t look at the table right now because regardless of where we are, it is more about how we play, how can we improve, how do we integrate the new players and how do we implement the next steps so that next year, we challenge for the Champions League spots?
“Hopefully, we finish as high up the table as possible but we are just focused on the performance and how we develop. I just want us to keep progressing, play better football than last time against Manchester City then reassess when we look at the table in May.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Tickets will be available to purchase on the day at Brisbane Road.
