Eidevall frustrated with Arsenal’s inconsistency ahead of trip to Aston Villa

Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall says that his side have had a very inconsistent season but it’s important to search for constructive ways to change that.

The Gunners currently sit in third place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table with six games left to play. Arsenal’s title hopes suffered a real blow last weekend as they slumped to a 3-1 loss to Chelsea and Eidevall admits that inconsistency has been a problem for his side this season.

“Our season so far has been very inconsistent,” Eidevall said. “You can see progress in individual games or individual periods where we have shown we are a very capable football team, playing some really good football and being able to compete with and beat our competitors. What we haven’t been able to show is that we are a team that is doing that consistently and perform at that standard consistently and that’s disappointing. That’s really where I hope we can get with this team.

“Are there some reasons why we’re not there? Yeah, of course there are some reasons for it. I think we’re in a season where we are still changing a lot with players coming in and building new relationships in the team and I think that’s part of it where we’re finding some inconsistencies, but it’s not the whole truth of it. It’s not like you see other teams always having the perfect selection of players to choose from and that they can’t keep consistency in their performances. I think that’s a part where we need to improve and we need to do that better, but I’m not waiting until the end of the season to try and find reasons why we have been inconsistent. That’s an ongoing process and we need to work with that.”

This weekend sees the return of Women’s Football Weekend which has become an annual event in the football calendar. Arsenal’s fixture sees them travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa. Commenting on the initiative, Eidevall believes that things are heading in the right direction.

He said “What we’ve been doing so well is getting more games played at the Emirates, getting better and bigger attendances, which is obviously really important.

“In a league, we can’t do it ourselves. We need many clubs doing it, so seeing Chelsea doing it at Stamford Bridge and Villa doing it this weekend, that all plays into the journey that I think we will want to go on as a league. I think it’s absolutely the right direction to go.”

Arsenal’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Aston Villa kicks-off at 6.45pm on Sunday evening.
