‘I know we have two tough games’ – Chelsea must focus on what they need to do says Hayes

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes is not getting carried away with the race for the Barclays Women’s Super League title and she says that her side must focus on their next task against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

If The Blues win their final two matches, they are almost certain to retain their league crown for another season. Chelsea travel to the Gaughan Group Stadium to face Spurs on Wednesday night before ending the campaign against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

When speaking to the media in a Chelsea press conference, manager Hayes said that she is not focusing too much on the title race and that she simply wants to see her side build on their recent 8-0 victory against Bristol City.

“I hope we build on Bristol City,” Hayes said. “There were so many things I saw in that game that I wanted to see from the team. They delivered that and the challenge is to do it again.

“I’m going to enjoy being in this position, you don’t often get into a position where you are competing for a title going into the last two games of the season. For those of us who have won titles, we know how hard it is. I’m happy to be in the position that we are in but I know we have two tough games.”

Chelsea’s latest opponents Spurs were defeated 4-0 by Manchester United on Sunday in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley. Hayes has admiration for the work that opposite number Robert Vilahamn has done this season and she expects Spurs to be aiming for a strong performance.

She said “I think their coach has done a great job, he really has. He has added a lot more belief to that team, a lot more quality in possession.

“In cup finals, on the day, Manchester United were the better team but we are London rivals, so I am sure that they’ll want to put in a performance.”

Regardless of Chelsea’s result against Spurs, the Barclays Women’s Super League’s title race will go down to the final day of the season. Hayes is not thinking about all of the permutations at this point.

She said “You can’t even talk about that, we have a game-in-hand and we have to win that. We can’t talk about what other teams are going to do, we just have to focus on what we need to do tomorrow night.”

Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 7.15pm on Wednesday evening.
