Sunderland have completed the signing of defender Jessie Stapleton on a season-long loan deal from Barclays Women’s Super League side West Ham United.
The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.
The 19-year-old Republic of Ireland international joined West Ham United from SSE Airtricity League Women’s Premier Division club Shelbourne last summer. Stapleton made two appearances for The Hammers in the first half of last season before joining former second tier side Reading on loan for the second half of the campaign. The midfielder made 11 appearances for The Royals in which she scored one goal.
Stapleton needs regular game time to continue to develop and she will now get that at Sunderland this season.
After completing her loan move to Sunderland, Stapleton said “I’m delighted and I just can’t wait to get going now. I’ve only been here a couple of days so far but I’m delighted to just be here, properly settle in and hit the ground running.”
Stapleton becomes Sunderland’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window. The youngster joins West Ham United teammate Keira Flannery in the North East. Flannery has also joined Sunderland on a season-long loan arrangement in recent weeks.
