‘We’re ready’ – Bompastor and Chelsea ready for latest WSL title challenge

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that the club are ready for a new Barclays Women’s Super League title challenge.

The Blues kick-off their new era under Bompastor’s leadership on Friday evening when they face Aston Villa in a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Kingsmeadow.

Chelsea appointed Bompastor as former boss Emma Hayes’ replacement in May. When speaking to the media in a Chelsea press conference, Bompastor said that she wants to carry on Hayes’ legacy by continuing to win titles. The Frenchwoman is no stranger to winning silverware and creating history having been the first woman to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League as a player and a manager with former club Lyon.

“We have the same ambitions,” Bompastor said. “When you’re Chelsea, you just want to win every single title, you want to compete in every competition. It’ll be tough but we are ready.

“The players are competitive and so am I, so we like to be in that position where we can compete.”

Going on to discuss the challenge of Aston Villa, Bompastor is giving the Midlands side complete respect. The Villans also have a new manager leading their team for the first time in Robert de Pauw.

She said “We’re the holders of the title and want to start strongly in the league tomorrow night, it’s really important. Coming to Chelsea, I know how competitive the league is here.

“If you look at Aston Villa’s results, they had a good pre-season with good results. They beat Manchester City and Manchester City were able to beat Paris FC last night 5-0, so we’re ready. We will have a hard time because this league is not easy but we’ve worked hard and feel ready for that, especially with fans at Kingsmeadow. It’s really exciting.”

Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa kicks-off at 7pm tomorrow night.
