England head coach Sarina Wiegman remains confident that she will return to the dugout when the Lionesses face Spain in Brighton tomorrow night.
Wiegman tested positive for the virus on Friday. She missed the Lionesses’ final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 group match against Northern Ireland in Southampton due to being in self-isolation.
England face Spain in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tomorrow night and while Wiegman continues to self-isolate, she remains confident that she may be able to return to the dugout for the match.
“I’m feeling well and I’m ready to go,” Wiegman said when speaking in the pre-match press conference.
“I am very hopeful (of returning to the dugout) but we will see, we do know that if I can’t be there, I will be around in another way.”
Wiegman has confirmed that she has been part of England’s training preparations in the lead up to tomorrow’s game, although she has been keeping a safe distance from the group.
She said “We had plans in place (for this challenge) and we had practiced one moment that I wasn’t around in our pre-camps but I am still around and doing my job, it just looks a little further away. I am really close because I am just doing my job virtually or outside.
“I am keeping a large distance and wearing a mask so we just deal with the situation and keep being agile and flexible.”
Spain play a possession-based game and Wiegman is expecting no different tomorrow night, although she believes that her side can cope with their opponents.
“I do expect the same game that they have played all of the time,” said the England boss. “They do have a lot of the ball but I hope we will too. We’ve played them before and they had a little more of the possession but that’s okay in certain elements of the game.
“We are pretty comfortable on the ball too so I am really excited to see what it looks like tomorrow evening.”
The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 quarter-final between England and Spain in Brighton kicks-off at 8pm on Wednesday evening.
