Everton sign Manchester United defender Aherne on loan

Everton have completed the signing of Manchester United defender Alyssa Aherne on a loan deal for the upcoming season.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blue Girls this afternoon.

Aherne has been on Manchester United’s books since she was 13 years of age and she signed her first professional contract with The Red Devils earlier this summer. The player made her senior debut as Manchester United defeated Sheffield United 4-0 in the group stage of last season’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup. Aherne has also spent time playing FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division football with Burnley.

The player is ready to step up to play senior football on a regular basis and the next step in her development sees her move to Everton on loan.

After joining the Merseyside club, Aherne said “It feels really nice to be here. This move to Everton is vital in terms of gaining experience at the top level. I want to challenge myself to get minutes in the Women’s Super League and to help the team.

“Seeing the likes of Jess Park and Aggie Beever-Jones come in on loan last season, earn that experience and showcase what they can do definitely influenced my decision to come here. Young players progress at this club, like Jess earning caps with the Lionesses. That’s encouraging to see and hopefully, I can improve during my time here.

“I’m really excited to work with Brian [Sørensen]. I feel like there’s good potential for this group and the plans the manager has for the squad.

“I know this is a step up but I’m looking forward to the challenge. Hopefully, it can be a good season for us.”

Aherne’s move to Everton comes just hours after defender Gabby George moved in the opposite direction on a permanent basis.
