Arsenal have become the new FA Women’s Super League champions after beating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at The Amex Stadium this afternoon.
Joe Montemurro’s side cruised to victory in Sussex and were simply to hot for an Albion side who can take plenty of pride from their development throughout their debut campaign in the top flight.
The North Londoners took the lead after just six minutes with top scorer Vivianne Miedema thumping in a stunning effort via the crossbar before the same player turned provider for Katie McCabe to fire home The Gunners’ second with a little over 30 minutes on the clock.
A stunning long distance strike from Beth Mead nestled in the top corner of the Albion net midway through the second period before Danielle van de Donk got her name on the scoresheet 15 minutes from time with a composed finish to wrap up the title for Montemurro’s side in what is his first full season in the English game.
The victory means that Arsenal’s next opponents Manchester City can no longer win back their league crown which they last held in 2016. The two sides meet at Meadow Park on Saturday 11 May with the majority of the sell-out crowd sure to make it a real carnival atmosphere.
This season’s FA Women’s Super League title success is Arsenal’s first since 2012 when they won the division by eight points. The club will have the reward of a long-awaited return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League next season following a lengthy absence from the competition.
