Manchester City and West Ham United stars Janine Beckie and Adriana Leon will learn whether they will be included in Canada head coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller’s 23-player squad for next month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup later this week.
Canada are one of 10 nations yet to name their final squads for the tournament but the deadline is approaching with all final squads to be declared to FIFA by Friday.
Both Beckie and Leon were included in a 22-player party for Canada’s friendly against Mexico in Toronto on Saturday. Manchester City forward Beckie started the match on the left wing against the Mexicans before being substituted in the second half as West Ham United player Leon came off the bench to net Canada’s third goal in what was a comfortable 3-0 win.
That match ended Canada’s pre-tournament preparations on home soil and the next step will be to name the final 23-player squad prior to boarding the plane to France. With Beckie and Leon having accrued 113 senior international caps between them in which they have shared 40 goals, the pair are almost certain to be included by head coach Heiner-Moller.
Canada open their 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on 10 June when they take on Cameroon in Montpellier before facing New Zealand and The Netherlands in their other Group E fixtures.
