STATS: The numbers behind new Manchester United signing Groenen

Manchester United announced the surprise transfer of Dutch international midfielder Jackie Groenen this afternoon with the player signing a pre-contract agreement at The Leigh Sports Village.

The 24-year-old Tilburg-born midfielder becomes The Red Angels’ first summer signing just days after the club’s promotion to the FA Women’s Super League was rubber stamped by The Football Association.

Groenen’s arrival in the North West has certainly got Manchester United fans very excited ahead of their side’s debut campaign in the top flight. After learning of the transfer, FAWSL Full-Time have taken a look at the facts and figures as we summarise Groenen’s career so far in numbers.

6 – Manchester United become Groenen’s sixth club of her senior career. The player has previously spent most of her career playing in Germany

46 – The midfielder has been capped by her country on no less than 46 occasions while she has netted two goals. Her last international goal came 12 months ago as the Dutch won a 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier in Northern Ireland 5-0

3 – Prior to the start of her footballing career, Groenen won three consecutive national championship winner’s medals in judo at Under-15 level

14 – Groenen spent 14 months with Chelsea earlier in her career in appeared in both the 2014 and 2015 FA Women’s Super League 1 competitions for The Blues

2016 – The player was handed her senior international debut for The Netherlands in January 2016 in back-to-back fixtures with Denmark

1 – Groenen was part of a Dutch side which won their first-ever UEFA Women’s European Championship title in 2017. She played in all six matches for Sarina Wiegman’s side

7 – The midfielder’s best season in-front of goal was in 2017/2018 when she scored seven goals for former club FFC Frankfurt

Prior to making her Manchester United debut, Groenen will be aiming to star for The Netherlands at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup with the midfielder having been named in the nation’s final 23-player squad for the tournament.
