Chelsea defender Thorisdottir delighted with Norway’s ‘perfect’ start

Chelsea defender Maria Thorisdottir has described Norway’s 3-0 victory over Nigeria in Reims in their opening FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 match as the ‘perfect’ start to the tournament.

The Blues defender was fielded by Norwegian coach Martin Sjogren from the start along with Chelsea teammate Karen Mjelde and summer signing Guro Reiten.

Norway had the game wrapped up within 40 minutes as they raced into a three-goal lead at the Stade Auguste-Delaune while Thorisdottir and Mjelde formed part of a resolute Norwegian back-line which kept a clean sheet.

Speaking to FAWSL Full-Time Magazine after the match, defender Thorisdottir described the win as the ‘perfect’ start for her nation.

“It is a good start” said the player. “This is all that we have dreamed about.

“Getting three points in the first game, yeah it’s perfect.”

Despite their heavy defeat, Nigeria created a number of counter attacks which tested the Norwegian defence. Thorisdottir was delighted that her side had soaked up the occasional pressure.

She added “We are always happy about the clean sheet and that is our goal in every game.

“They could be dangerous if we got caught out when on the attack so we did well in the back-line, they didn’t get too many big chances.”

New Chelsea teammate Guro Reiten starred for Norway in the middle and Thorisdottir believes that her national colleague will be a huge hit at Kingsmeadow.

“She has struggled a bit in international games” Thorisdottir confessed. “Today, she showed everybody what quality she has.

“I am happy for her and can’t wait to see her at Kingsmeadow, I think she can bring good qualities into the group.

“She can be a part of that team which will be aiming to push higher and have a better season next season.”

Tournament hosts France now await Norway in a mouth-watering fixture and Thorisdottir simply cannot wait to get on the pitch and play in that game.

She said “I am really excited to play against France.

“They are a much better team than Nigeria but if we all play like we did in the first half of today’s game, I think we have a chance to win the game.”

That game against the French will take place in Nice on Wednesday evening and is scheduled to kick-off at 8pm BST.
