Welcome to this week’s update on all things Manchester City Women from us here at the Official Supporters’ Club.
This week has seen us and author Andrew Waldon work very hard on our 2019 Official Supporter’s Club yearbook, which should be released for the start of the season. We are also delighted to announce that as with last year’s edition, we have an exclusive cover designed by artist Lesley Ross from 93:20 Art. You will have to wait a little bit longer to find out who is this year’s cover star.
Last week, I promised that I would look at our summer signings a little closer. I honestly feel that with high profile departures such as Nikita Parris and Jen Beattie, our incoming signings have been a little overlooked. Obviously Ellen White needs no introduction as her FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 performances show. She is an out-and-out goalscorer and is a player who many of our fans have coveted for many years.
Matilde Fidalgo is a Portuguese international full-back and from all accounts, is very much in the modern style, all action and energetic.
Laura Coombs from Liverpool is also a good signing. She is a very experienced player in the FA Women’s Super League who has always impressed when we have faced her. She seems to be adaptable, which is a very good quality in a modern footballer.
Finally, we welcome defender Aoife Mannion. Again, she has always been so impressive when Manchester City have come up against her playing for former side Birmingham City. I feel that she is certain to earn a Lionesses senior cap sooner rather than later as she has already been on the fringes of the squad. She is a leader at such a young age and that can only be a good thing.
So far, some very good signings for City, there may of course be more but we must remember that the likes of Megan Campbell and Pauline Bremer are returning from long term injuries therefore they will also feel like new signings and will swell the squad.
Finally, at the weekend the group were again out and about supporting our former players in another walking football tournament. City were the only women’s team entered and although they did not qualify for the final, they did themselves and us proud.
Have a good week.
