Welcome to this week’s column from the Manchester City Women Official Supporters’ Club.
A busy week indeed here as we have seen our girls in pre-season action out in the United States in the 2019 Women’s International Champions Cup with two highly competitive friendlies against North Carolina Courage and Atletico Madrid .
The North Carolina game was going well with us 1-0 up until a horrendous thunderstorm forced the players into a near-90-minute break in the second half. When play resumed, it seemed difficult for City to rebuild the tempo and the home side netted twice to take the spoils. It must be said that we played very well for our first real pre-season outing and we were unfortunate not to get a result.
On Sunday, we faced Atletico Madrid and came out on top 3-2 winners in a real seesaw game that saw both teams lead at one point. This time we snatched a late winner. I think Nick Cushing will see the games as extremely positive workouts.
From a supporters’ club point of view, the tour has seen us forge new friendships with MCFC Raleigh (@MCFCRaleigh) and the fantastic North Carolina Junkyard Dogs (@NCJunkyardDogs), North Carolina‘s fervent fanbase. We hope to maintain these links and we would like to express our huge thanks to them for all of the interaction.
Back home in Manchester we have been busy again. Sunday saw us attend the 70th anniversary dinner celebration. We had our own table and our guest was the original Manchester City Ladies manager Neil Mather and his wife. We mixed with many City legends and a wonderful amount of money was raised for charity.
Our focus now switches to this Saturday’s Manchester Pride parade when we will be joining the official club float and our friends at CanalStBlues (@CanalStBlues) marching through the streets of our wonderful city. It is a highlight of our calendar and something which we are very proud to take part in.
We were amazed and proud to see an image of ourselves emblazoned on the club’s and supporters’ club official poster artwork for the anniversary, the image will apparently find it’s way onto many items throughout the season. We even signed our first autographs at last nights event (very odd!).
I recently mentioned our partnerships for 2019/2020 which we announced at our AGM. We are very proud to say that we are once again sponsoring Tameside United Girls FC Under-11s team and they will proudly display our badge on their shirts. Our fantastic partnership with FAWSL Full-Time magazine will continue as the magazine goes from strength-to-strength. We are proud to back it and again see our badge shine out on the cover. We do have more charity projects in the pipeline and more information will be provided on those as they are finalised.
Enjoy your week, keep smiling and see you all next week.
