Arsenal forward Beth Mead has been named the Sports Hero of 2019 by The Yorkshire Post following her strong performances for club and country throughout the calendar year.
The 24-year-old Whitby-born striker has beaten off a number of strong fellow candidates to land the title including Sheffield United men’s manager Chris Wilder who guided his side to a fairytale promotion to the English Premier League followed by an excellent for half of the season in the top flight.
Mead helped Arsenal to their first FA Women’s Super League title since 2012 last season. The player provided more assists in a single season than any other player in FA Women’s Super League history, Mead created 12 goals for The Gunners, while she made 54 goalscoring chances for her teammates. Her partnership with Dutch goal machine Vivianne Miedema was also the most successful in the top division.
The striker scored six goals for England during the calendar year including two for the Lionesses in the SheBelieves Cup as they won the tournament back in March. Mead was included in the England squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 and featured in five of the Lionesses’ seven fixtures at the tournament as they finished fourth.
Mead signed a new long-term deal with Arsenal in November with the player having continued her good form into the new season.
