Liverpool forget FAWSL struggles as they hit Blackburn Rovers for eight

Liverpool had the opportunity to forget their struggles in the FA Women’s Super League this season and they took full advantage by defeating Blackburn Rovers 8-1 in their Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

The Reds were initially drawn out at home to Rovers but the tie was switched following concerns over the playing surface at Prenton Park.

Striker Rinsola Babajide was the star of the show with four goals and she opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, tapping home a loose ball in the area.

Niamh Fahey fired home a second following an error from home keeper Lauren Perry before former Liverpool player Ellie Stewart pulled a goal back for the FA Women’s Championship side.

Babajide soon volleyed home a third for Liverpool before Niamh Charles’ goal gave Vicky Jepson’s side a three-goal advantage going into the interval.

Forward Babajide completed her hat-trick just after the hour mark when her effort squirmed beyond Perry. It was a day to remember for the player and she thumped home her fourth and Liverpool’s sixth with two minutes of the match remaining.

Kirsty Linnett struck a seventh as the clock reached 90 before a Blackburn Rovers own goal rounded off great afternoon’s work for the Merseyside club who will have received a boost of confidence going into the next round of fixtures in the FA Women’s Super League.
