Manchester United defender Lotta Okvist made her senior international debut for Sweden as they lost 2-1 to Denmark in their second Argarve Cup 2020 match this afternoon.
The 23-year-old Pitea-born full-back was a late inclusion in the Sweden squad for the tournament with head coach Peter Gerhardsson drafting her in as a replacement for Linda Sembrant following the player’s decision not to travel due to the current Coronavirus risk.
The Manchester United player was an unused substitute as Sweden were defeated in their first fixture at the tournament on Wednesday, losing 1-0 to Germany but she was handed her debut against Denmark at the Lagos Municipal Stadium this afternoon.
Okvist played the first 87 minutes of the match for the Swedes on the left of midfield before being replaced by Caroline Seger. Gerhardsson’s side took the lead in the first half through a Lina Hurtig goal but Stine Larsen levelled for Denmark early in the second half. The match looked to be heading for a penalty shootout until Nanna Christiansen netted the winner for the Danes deep in second half injury time.
Sweden will face the losers of this evening’s fixture between Belgium and Portugal on Tuesday as the two sides play for seventh place. Defender Okvist will be hoping that she has done enough to be given further game time in that match.
