PREVIEW: Japan v England

England will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on Japan in their second SheBelieves Cup match at the Red Bull Arena in New York this evening.

Not even the lucky Gareth Southgate waistcoat could save under-fire England boss Phil Neville from watching his side crash to a 2-0 defeat to tournament hosts the USA on Friday morning. The Lionesses were toothless and were comprehensively beaten by the world champions.

Neville could make changes to his starting XI for this evening’s match against a Japan side who also lost their opening match, they went down 3-1 to Spain on Thursday evening. In defence, Demi Stokes and Abbie McManus could come into consideration while Jordan Nobbs and Chloe Kelly could be selected in midfield. Chelsea forward Beth England is likely to start the match given the Lionesses’ lack of goal threat in their first fixture at the tournament.

England boss Neville again has a dilemma on who to field in goal. He could opt to retain the services of Carly Telford who was excellent against the USA, however, Manchester City’s Ellie Roebuck has proved her fitness in training while Everton’s Sandy MacIver is also waiting for her chance.

England’s fixture against Japan kicks-off at 6.15pm and will be screened live on BBC Two and BBC Four.
