Manchester City midfielder uses creative spark to inspire others through poetry

Manchester City and England international midfielder Jill Scott MBE has been using the break from FA Women’s Super League action to create an inspirational poem.

Fans of both Manchester City and the Lionesses will have seen Scott’s creative spark come out as she has told the story of ‘A time to reflect’, an inspirational poem which the player has written herself displaying her thoughts on the current situation as the world continues to battle the Coronavirus crisis. The poem has also been published on the official Manchester City website.

Scott has 149 senior international caps for her country and has scored 25 goals but the player’s life is not just about football, she also has a love for poetry and has written a beautiful piece which captures the current situation perfectly. ‘A time to reflect’ highlights key elements of the current crisis including the importance of social distancing, helping those in need, how we can be role models to our children and the heroes of the NHS.

If you haven’t read ‘A time to reflect’, here is the poem:

‘An unexpected event now presented with time,
Finding comforts in words and a simple rhyme.
Always thought what we would do with a long break,
But now it’s here, I don’t know what to make!
People needing help but being told to stay away…
Time on our hands but dictated to each day.
Being sensible spending time alone,
Avoiding wasting hours on a mobile phone.
Thinking of all the families going through pain;
Small, independent businesses: will they ever regain?
Time to be a role model – an important role
Looking after the elderly and sharing toilet roll!
Checking in with family faces provided through Skype,
Trying to keep them calm in this chaotic hype!
Indoor games, movies and talking.
If you’re outdoors, keep your distance when walking.
A time to reflect on how we can improve,
Can we use this time to make a forward move?
Healthier lifestyle, despite lack of resources.
Our lives about to take different courses.
‘Old skool’ games on their way back.
Maybe that creativity is nowadays what we lack!
Normal days not pushing our energy and thought –
Just staring and doing things that we’ve bought.
Kids now facing a school ban.
We can still teach them life skills – I know that we can.
We will get through all this if we just stick together,
Show great attitude, love and endeavour.
NHS workers: give them the help they deserve.
Running on empty – not leaving anything in reserve.
They are our heroes and we shouldn’t wait
To recognise their great work and really appreciate!’

Scott’s services to women’s football were recognised earlier this year with the player having been awarded an MBE in the 2020 New Year Honours. The midfielder has been an inspiration to so many people throughout her career and she is continuing to be a great role model even when a ball is not being kicked.

As mentioned in the poem ‘It is time to be a role model’. This is no longer a line just to be associated with Scott, we can all be role models as the world works together to beat the Coronavirus.
