Manchester United secured promotion to the FA Women’s Super League with three games to spare by defeating Aston Villa 5-0 at the Leigh Sports Village 12 months ago.
FA Women’s Super League Full-Time look back at that fixture as Casey Stoney’s side navigated their way beyond the most improved side in the division to confirm their place in the FA Women’s Championship’s top two.
Promotion may have been on the line at the Leigh Sports Village but Manchester United were focussed from the off and Millie Turner headed Stoney’s side into a sixth-minute lead.
United had a golden chance to extend their lead in the 21st minute when Villa keeper Sian Rogers brought down Lizzie Arnot in the box. Full-back Alex Greenwood stepped up and successfully converted the resulting penalty kick.
Jess Sigsworth then raced away to fire home a third goal to give United a 3-0 advantage at the break after some great work by Mollie Green.
Ella Toone struck United’s fourth goal early in the second half before Villa keeper Rogers capped-off a bad night on a personal level as she was sent off for handling the ball outside of the area.
Defender Jade Richards had to go in goal for the remainder of the match and she was almost picking the ball out of the net immediately but Toone’s free-kick deflected onto the bar.
The final United goal came 17 minutes from time when substitute Charlie Devlin showed a dazzling array of skills to see off the Villa defenders before sweetly striking the ball into the net.
It was a comprehensive victory for Stoney’s side who confirmed their promotion after just one season in the second tier.
