With the discussion of when football may resume comes the debate of who fans would want their club to sign during the summer transfer window.
We do not know what situation the beautiful game will find itself in come the start of the 2020/2021 season but that will not stop Manchester United fans discussing areas in which manager Casey Stoney could strengthen her side in the summer as the club seeks glory in their second season in the top flight. With that said, here is my top five players that us fans would love to see pull on a United shirt next season.
Chloe Kelly has been identified by fans as being our opportunity to find a regular goalscorer to give us the firepower we need and have missed at times this season. The Evertonian has scored nine goals in 17 appearances this season and has also recently featured in the England squad. The 22-year-old would be welcomed as a fans’ favourite as a she is a player that fans have ‘scouted’ during our many face-offs against Everton, she has impressed many fans with her displays. The youngster could really thrive at United with the support of some fantastic players already in the squad. If signed, the young prodigy could offer goals for seasons to come, with a regular attacking threat.
Another potential player which United fans have been eyeing up for her sublime goalscoring record is Turbine Potsdam youngster Lara Prasnikar. At the age of just 21, she has already scored eight goals in 16 appearances for her national team, Slovenia. She has also been impressing at club level, the daughter of ex-Slovenian national team manager Bojan Prasnikar, has racked up 15 goals in 16 appearances this season. That record would help United solve one or two goalscoring woes experienced this season and would also take the pressure off our current forward players. The youngster can only get better which could see her become integral towards United’s push for glory if Stoney followed our dreams by opting to sign her this summer.
With the step up to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, comes the need for United to strengthen their defence and one spot especially, left-back. A gaping hole was left when club captain Alex Greenwood left for Lyon last summer, as Stoney struggled to find a replacement for her which really showed in performances this season. A player which many fans would love to see come in and fill that left-back spot is Bristol City’s 20-year-old left-back Poppy Pattinson. She dazzled in her performance against us as she managed to effectively shut down any advances down the flanks. So far, we have had numerous players fill in this position including Amy Turner and Kirsty Smith, it would be good to see an out-and-out left-back specialist claim this position whoever that may be.
With Liverpool possibly facing the drop from the top flight of English football should the football season resume, it would be expected that many stars could choose to leave Prenton Park to remain in full-time competition should relegation be the final result. One such player that United fans would love to see in their ranks is Niamh Charles, someone who spent the early stages of her career in a Liverpool side that featured our manager Stoney. The attacker would no doubt relish the opportunity to meet up with many of her other former teammates who have joined United. The 20-year-old has featured for England at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-20 levels and will no doubt in time look to break into the senior squad. If our hopes ever became reality and Charles joined United, the player would offer competition for starting spots for our current wingers Kirsty Hanson, Leah Galton and Lizzie Arnot. We all know that Stoney likes to give opportunities to youth and build a team with a mix of youngsters alongside more experienced players for guidance, something Charles would learn from.
This is probably a bit of a pipe dream but if Stoney was to look for a more experienced head, then we would surely hope that she would look no further than world renowned superstar Lucy Bronze. The England international has hinted in interviews that she could return home to England following the expiration of her contract at European champions Lyon. With a previous history of featuring for all the sides in the North West: Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton, United fans could be forgiven for hoping and praying that she can make it four out of four and join the red side of Manchester. The right-back is renowned for being the best in her position in the world and who knows, maybe she would love the challenge of helping us gain glory. One thing that is for certain, if we managed to sign a player of such calibre it would be a major coup for United which would absolutely delight the fans and would be a huge statement of intent.
The quintet mentioned above are of course players who we would like to see Stoney sign as fans of United, there is nothing to suggest that any of these fabulous five will be leaving their current clubs. We will wait for the next transfer window and watch with real interest at what business is conducted by United. It would certainly be fantastic to see some more big names at the Leigh Sports Village next season.
