The termination of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League season has signalled the end for eight Reading players as their current contracts have now expired.
Reading have announced via their official club website that the players departing Adams Park are long-serving Royals Remi Allen and Charlie Estcourt along with Maz Pacheco, Millie Farrow, Jo Potter, Rachel Laws, Sophie Howard, and Maxime Bennink.
Many will be sad to midfielder Allen leave with the player having made over 80 appearances for the club since her arrival in 2016. Allen has been at the club since their arrival in the top flight and is often seen in the centre of midfield controlling play.
Another player who Royals fans will be sad to see depart is youngster Estcourt. The Welsh international was being tipped to make her mark on the first team despite having being on loan at second tier side Charlton Athletic last season. The 22-year-old began her career with Reading at just eight years of age before leaving for Chelsea. She returned to the club in 2015.
The departure of veteran Potter comes just weeks after Reading lost the services of another experienced midfielder in Jade Moore. Potter is a seasoned England international with a wealth of knowledge and experience. The 35-year-old has made over a half-century of appearances for Reading in both the central midfield and centre-back positions.
Reading will be looking for goalkeeper cover this summer with understudy Laws featuring amongst the departures. The 29-year-old’s game time has been limited during her two years at Adams Park largely due to the form of first choice goalkeeper Grace Moloney.
Forwards Farrow and Bennink are also leaving the club. Farrow has struggled for starts during her two years with Reading while Dutch youngster Bennink has failed to impress and was loaned out to Brighton & Hove Albion during the second half of this season.
Defensively The Royals say farewell to Pacheco and Howard. Pacheco has long been regarded as one to watch and will hopefully flourish at her next club. She was a part of the England FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup squad that won bronze in 2018. Scotland international Howard boasts an impressive CV with the player having featured in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the German Frauen-Bundesliga and it will be interesting to learn of her next destination.
Manager Kelly Chambers has thanked all of the departing players for their parts played in the success and development at the club. With just 15 players left on Reading’s books, the club will need to do some recruiting this summer.
