Teenage midfielder’s Manchester United departure confirmed

Manchester United’s teenage midfielder Aimee Palmer’s two-year spell at the Leigh Sports Village is coming to an end with the club having confirmed via their official website that the player is not being offered a new deal.

Palmer joined The Red Devils as part of their first professional squad in 2018 when she made the long journey up north from Bristol City.

In her first season with United, Palmer made 15 appearances, scoring one goal which came against Lewes at the end of last season. She has failed to make a single appearance for the club throughout the 2019/2020 season and spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Sheffield United. Palmer made 18 appearances for the FA Women’s Championship club, scoring six goals including a brace and an assist on her debut in a 7-1 victory over Leicester City.

When speaking about Palmer’s departure, Manchester United manager Casey Stoney said “Aimee has been with us from the start of this journey and will be forever be a part of Manchester United Women’s history makers.

“I have seen her grow as a player and person both on and off the pitch, and I would like to thank her for her efforts over the last couple of years and wish her the best of luck going forward.”

The midfielder is United’s second confirmed departure of the summer after it was revealed that goalkeeper Aurora Mikalsen would not be staying on beyond the current season. Although Palmer hasn’t confirmed where her next destination will be, it would be no surprise to see her return to one of her former clubs.

As for United, they will most certainly be looking to strengthen in midfield this summer as Stoney has consistently favoured a midfield three and may need more depth in the centre of the park for next season.
