Finnish international forward Adelina Engman has left Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions Chelsea and has joined French Division 1 Feminine side Montpellier HSC according to reports on The Blues’ official website.
Engman wore the number 17 in the blue of Chelsea and she will keep hold of that number when she runs out for Montpellier in the French top flight next season.
Engman joined the South West Londoners from Swedish side Goteborg and has been with Emma Hayes’ side for the last two years. The Finnish international made just two appearances in the 2019/2020 season due to injury but scored one goal, a stoppage time equaliser against Brighton & Hove Albion in the league all the way back in September. With the acquisition of Sam Kerr and the superb form of Beth England, Engman has arguably fallen down the pecking order for a place in the attack for Chelsea. Consequently, her departure is unlikely to have too much of an impact on the side and she is far more likely to get minutes in the south of France.
Manager Hayes had nothing but praise for the part which Engman played at Chelsea during her time with the club. When speaking with official club media channels, she admitted “That equaliser at Brighton has gone a long way to securing another league title for us.
“I know Adelina hasn’t had the best couple of years, due to injury, but she’s made telling contributions when they mattered.
“She’s been a great teammate off the pitch, a pleasure to coach, and I look forward to seeing her career progress at her new club.”
This may not be the last piece of business that these two sides do this summer. It has previously been rumoured that Chelsea are big admirers of Montpellier and French international left-back Sakina Karchaoui while teams like Barcelona, Lyon, and VfL Wolfsburg are also thought to potentially be vying for her signature.
