Arsenal keeper set for several weeks on the sidelines

Experienced Arsenal goalkeeper Lydia Williams is set for a period on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury according to reports on The Gunners’ official website.

The 32-year-old Australian international stopper joined The Gunners earlier this summer, replacing outgoing keeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

It has today been reported that Williams has sustained an ankle injury during Arsenal’s pre-season programme and she will be out of action for a number of weeks. The player will therefore not be part of Joe Montemurro’s matchday squad to face French club Paris Saint-Germain in Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie at the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian on Saturday night.

Williams has started her rehabilitation, however, the player is likely to miss several of the opening games in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Austrian international Manuela Zinsberger will start Arsenal’s tie against Paris Saint-Germain in Spain while youngster Fran Stenson is likely to deputise in the absence of Williams.

Should The Gunners successfully see off the threat of the French club, they will face either European champions Lyon or German side Bayern Munich in the semi-finals at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on Wednesday evening. The final will take place at the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian on Sunday 30 August.
