Manchester United have today announced the signing of United States international forward Christen Press from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Utah Royals as reported on the club’s official website.
The forward joins The Red Devils on an initial one-year deal subject to the player obtaining a work permit.
The 31-year-old has spent her career with several sides both in the USA and Europe, including particularly fruitful spells with Tyreso FF and the Chicago Red Stars. During her two years with newly-formed Utah Royals, Press made 25 appearances, scoring 10 goals.
The California-born striker made her first appearance for her national side in 2013 in a friendly against Scotland. She has since gone on to become tenth in the all-time top scorers list for the national side with 58 goals. Press has won two FIFA Women’s World Cups during her career at Canada 2015 and France 2019. Other than scoring goals, she is also renowned for her assists, often making space for a fellow striker. Last year, for the USA she made 12 assists and proved her worth in appearing in all 24 matches for her country in 2019. She will offer United valuable experience and guidance for the side’s younger strikers, with her current career goal tally standing at 124 goals in 196 appearances.
After joining United, Press told the club’s official media sources “I’m really excited to be joining Manchester United this season. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to play for such an elite club and beyond ready to get back on the field.
“I feel blessed to have the opportunity to continue to strive to be my best and to compete for trophies this year. I look forward to this new challenge and I can’t wait to start training with the team.”
Christen Press joins fellow American Tobin Heath in becoming United’s second signing of the day and their fifth of the summer.
