Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of Alex Morgan from Orlando Pride on a deal for the 2020/2021 season as reported on their official club website.
The completion of the move is subject to Morgan successfully obtaining a visa.
The co-captain of the United States national side, who has won back-to-back world titles, is a major coup for the North London side who finished last season in seventh place in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
The striker famously celebrated her goal against England at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 by pretending to sip tea.
Morgan made her professional debut at Western New York flash in 2011, helping the team to win the Women’s Professional Soccer Championship. In the same year, she was the youngest member of the United States national side who finished second at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011.
At the 2012 Olympic Games Morgan scored the winning goal in the 123rd minute of the semi-final match against Canada as the USA went on to win gold. She was named US Soccer Female Athlete of the Year and was a FIFA World Player of the Year finalist.
In that same year, Morgan joined Seattle Sounders before moving to Portland Thorns FC in 2013 where she won the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) title. She was traded to Orlando Pride in 2017.
Morgan won the Silver Boot at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 and has scored 107 times in 169 appearances for the USA. She won the Division 1 Feminine title, the Coupe de France Feminine and the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2017 whilst on loan at Lyon and has been named in the FIFPro World XI in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
The move will see Morgan reunited with Orlando Pride teammates Alanna Kennedy and Shelina Zadorsky who joined Spurs on loan earlier in the transfer window. The signing will strengthen a young Spurs side and expand the profile of Tottenham Hotspur and the Barclays FA Women’s Super League around the world.
